Colin Powell was born in Harlem to Jamacain immigrants in 1937. Growing up in the dangerous streets of New York City, his life lacked purpose until his enrollment in ROTC while in college. He depended on his morality and love for his country as he navigated his military career through the ranks, eventually emerging as a four star general. He continued to serve his country in Washington politics. His service covered five different presidencies, both Democratic and Republican and included positions as assistant to the Deputy Secreatary of Defense, senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and eventually as Secreatry of State. Through the years he has had ring-side seats to historic events such as: the invasion of Genada, the airstrike agaisnt Libya, the Iran-Contra affair, and the demise of the Soviet Union and end to the cold war. However, it wasn't until his successful involvement in Desert Storm and the invasion of Iraq in 1991, that he became a man of national influence.
